Why You're Starving at 3pm (And It's Not About Willpower)
By Denise Thibodeau | Certified Wholistic Health Coach | NourishHER.health
It's around 3 o'clock.
Lunch feels like it happened hours ago.
Your energy starts to disappear.
If you're working from home — you find yourself standing in the pantry.
If you're at the office — you suddenly remember the chocolate you've tucked away in your desk drawer.
Or maybe you're already thinking about the vending machine.
You aren't even sure what you're looking for.
You just know you need something.
Something sweet. Something crunchy. Something to help you get through the rest of the day.
Sound familiar?
For years, I thought I just loved chocolate.
Looking back — I don't think I was craving chocolate at all.
I think I was craving energy.
That was one of the biggest lightbulb moments of my entire health journey.
What I Didn't Understand
One of the biggest things I've learned over the past 18 months is that our bodies are incredibly smart.
Your body runs on fuel.
As the afternoon goes on, your energy naturally begins to drop. If your blood sugar has fallen too quickly, your body goes to work trying to protect you.
One of the ways it does that is by releasing stress hormones — like cortisol and adrenaline — to help bring your blood sugar back up.
That's why you can suddenly feel:
Tired
Foggy
Irritable
Desperate for something sweet
Your body isn't being dramatic. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do.
What surprised me even more was learning that this becomes even more noticeable during perimenopause and menopause.
As our hormones shift, so does the way our bodies handle blood sugar. No wonder so many women feel like 3pm suddenly becomes the hardest part of the day.
Once I understood that — everything started making sense.
I wasn't weak. I wasn't failing.
My body was simply asking for support.
What's Actually Happening at 3pm
Afternoon cravings are one of the most common body signals women over 40 experience — and they are almost never about willpower. Here are the real contributors:
Protein gaps at breakfast When breakfast is light or skipped entirely, blood sugar rises quickly and then drops — leaving you chasing energy by mid-afternoon.
Blood sugar swings Every time blood sugar spikes and crashes, your body signals its need for fast fuel. Sugar is the fastest fuel your body knows.
Poor sleep Even partial sleep deprivation raises your hunger hormone (ghrelin) and lowers your fullness hormone (leptin) — making cravings significantly harder to manage the next day.
Stress and cortisol Cortisol drives your body to seek quick-energy foods. Chronic low-grade stress is one of the biggest hidden drivers of afternoon cravings — and most of us are running on low-grade stress all day long.
Dehydration Your brain can confuse thirst with hunger. Even mild dehydration can trigger a craving signal. Before reaching for something sweet — try a full glass of water first.

What Changed For Me
Today, I don't look at my afternoon cravings the same way.
Instead of feeling guilty — I get curious.
I ask myself:
Did I eat enough protein today?
Did I build a balanced lunch?
Have I had enough fibre?
Have I had enough water?
Have I been running from one thing to the next without taking care of myself?
Those questions changed everything.
What I've Added to My Afternoon Routine
These days, I start with the basics first.
A protein-rich breakfast.
A balanced lunch.
Plenty of water.
Those simple habits have made the biggest difference.
Then I look at supplements to help support the foundation I've already built.
One I've been experimenting with lately is Beyond Creatine from Youngevity.
I'll admit, when I first heard the word creatine, I immediately thought of bodybuilders and heavy workouts. But I quickly learned that's only part of the story.
Creatine is a naturally occurring compound found in your muscles and brain. Its job is to help your cells produce and recycle energy. As we get older, our natural creatine stores and dietary intake may not always be enough to support our changing energy needs.
Beyond Creatine combines creatine with D-ribose and amino acids to help support cellular energy production, cognitive function, and muscle health. What I appreciate most is that it isn't a stimulant. There's no caffeine, no jitters, and no afternoon crash—just nutritional support for the way our bodies naturally produce energy.
I've found it fits nicely into my afternoon routine as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

As always, this is simply part of my personal wellness routine. Individual results vary, and supplements are meant to complement—not replace—a healthy diet and lifestyle. Always consult your healthcare professional before making changes to your diet or supplement routine.
Makes Me Wonder...
How many times have we blamed ourselves when our body was simply asking for better fuel?
Maybe those afternoon cravings aren't working against you.
Maybe they're another clue.
One more dot waiting to be connected.
What if 3 p.m. isn't the problem...
What if it's your body's way of asking for support?
