Why Protein at Breakfast Changed Everything.

By Denise Thibodeau | NourishHER.health

When my kids were growing up, mornings were a race against the clock.

Getting everyone dressed.

Packing lunches.

Making sure homework made it into backpacks.

Keeping an eye on the clock so no one missed the bus.

If one little thing went sideways, the whole morning felt off.

Can you relate?

Somewhere in the middle of all that, I quietly stopped eating breakfast.

Not because I thought it wasn't important.

Not because I was trying to lose weight.

It simply became a habit to make sure everyone else was looked after before I thought about myself.

I'd pour a coffee, head out the door, and tell myself I'd eat later.

Most days, "later" became lunchtime.

I got used to it.

Even after the kids were grown and life looked completely different, the habit stayed with me.

Coffee became breakfast.

And I never really questioned it.

I thought I was doing just fine.

Until I discovered what skipping breakfast was actually doing to my body.

That was one of those lightbulb moments I'll never forget.

For years, I blamed myself for the mid-morning energy crash, the constant cravings, and feeling like I was running on empty.

I thought I needed another coffee.

More willpower.

Maybe I was just getting older.

But none of those things were the real problem.

My body wasn't asking for more caffeine.

It was asking for fuel.

The Moment Everything Clicked

What I didn't understand was that my body wasn't asking for more coffee.

It was asking for fuel.

Our bodies naturally wake up with a rise in cortisol. It's one of the ways we're designed to get up and get moving.

But when breakfast never shows up, our bodies keep searching for the fuel they were expecting.

No wonder I felt tired.

No wonder I couldn't concentrate.

No wonder I was standing in the pantry before lunch looking for something—anything—to eat.

It wasn't a lack of willpower.

It was biology.

And honestly?

That realization lifted a huge weight off my shoulders.

Then I Learned About Protein

As women move through perimenopause and menopause, our bodies become less efficient at maintaining muscle.

That means protein becomes even more important than it was in our younger years.

Muscle supports our metabolism, helps keep blood sugar steady, improves energy, and even helps us stay strong enough to enjoy everyday life.

So instead of asking,

"What can I eat for breakfast?"

I started asking,

"Where's my protein?"

Now my goal is simple:

30 grams of protein to start my day.

Not perfection.

Just protein first.

What Changed?

The morning crash disappeared.

The constant snacking slowed down.

I stayed full longer.

My energy became steadier.

And perhaps the biggest surprise...

I stopped blaming myself.

Nothing was wrong with me.

My body had simply been asking for something different.

Three Simple Tips

Think protein first.

Eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, or a protein smoothie are all great places to start.

Don't wait until you're starving.

Even if you're not very hungry first thing, try something small. Your body will often adapt after a couple of weeks.

Keep it easy.

Meal prep egg bites or smoothie packs on the weekend. Busy mornings don't have to mean skipping breakfast.

My Favourite Busy-Morning Breakfast

One of my favourite breakfasts is a protein smoothie.

It's quick.

It's delicious.

It keeps me full for hours.

I also add Beyond Tangy Tangerine® because it helps fill nutritional gaps while I'm already making breakfast.

One blender.

One glass.

Done.

Simple wins every time.

It Makes Me Wonder...

How many things have we accepted as "normal" that really aren't?

Living on coffee.

Crashing before lunch.

Feeling exhausted halfway through the day.

Constant cravings.

Maybe those aren't just part of getting older.

Maybe they're clues.

The more I learn, the more I realize my body wasn't working against me.

It was talking to me all along.

I just needed to learn how to listen.
